Beeswax Candles

If you are new to candle making then making beeswax candles is a great first up project as no molten wax is involved. They are fun and inexpensive to make. All you need is some wick and a beeswax sheet. Beeswax Candles have a honeycomb texture and emits a pleasant, natural scent. They do not drip or smoke and burns longer than paraffin candles.

What you will need – Candle supplies

  • Honeycomb Beeswax Sheets
  • Cotton Wick (at least ½” longer than the beeswax sheet)
  • Scissors
  • Knife

1) Place your beeswax sheet on a clean, smooth surface so that it can be rolled easily. Lay a wick on the shorter side of the beeswax sheet directly in front of you.

2) Crimp the edge of the wax over the wick and press it down gently so that it covers the wick. Roll tightly and evenly and seal the end by smoothing the seam with your thumb.

3) Continue to roll the beeswax sheet tightly and evenly. Make sure while you are rolling that the edges are straight otherwise your beeswax candle may have trouble standing.

As you roll the beeswax you can see that the diameter will grow.

Note: It is important that the end of your candle is rolled as tight as you did at in the first step and that the edges are still straight while you are at the end of rolling up the last of your beeswax sheet.

4) Once you have finished rolling the beeswax, press the edge gently into the body of the candle. Don’t press too hard though, you don’t want to crush your candle.

Note: No adhesive is required to stick the ends in place, just use your own body heat.

Continue to press all along the end of the rolled beeswax sheet. You can use your nails to attach it firmly.

5) Trim the wick at the top of the candle to 1/2” before you start burning your beeswax candle.

6) Final Beeswax Candle

Candle Making Tips:

The beeswax sheets need to be warm to roll easily. If it is too cool the beeswax sheet can crack while you are rolling it, as it will be too brittle. If you feel that your beeswax sheet is too brittle use a hair dryer for a few seconds to warm it up. Be careful not to melt the wax!

Overtime you may see a cloudy film on the surface of your beeswax candles. This is called ‘bloom’. Bloom is a natural characteristic of beeswax and can be removed by warming the candle with a hair dryer. Be careful not to melt the candle
